Scott Martin

Scott A. Martin is an Assistant Federal Public Defender and the Appellate Division Chief at the Office of the Federal Public Defender for the Southern District of Texas, in Houston, where he has worked since 2014. Mr. Martin is a graduate of Harvard College and the University of Michigan Law School.

Mr. Martin began his legal career in 2002 as a law clerk for the Honorable Emilio M. Garza of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. His diverse experience includes roles as a litigation associate at Baker Botts L.L.P., as a staff attorney for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and as an Assistant District Attorney in Middlesex County, Massachusetts. Ultimately, he chose to focus on defending individuals in federal criminal cases who cannot afford adequate representation.

Mr. Martin initially worked as a Research & Writing Attorney at the Federal Public Defender offices in Boston, Massachusetts, and Austin, Texas, before becoming an AFPD in the Appellate Division of the FPD office in Houston, where he works now. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of Houston Law Center, where he enjoys teaching a course on Criminal Sentencing Law and Policy.
