An attorney is compensated for the number of hours expended for representation at the hourly rate approved for the circuit or district where the proceedings are held. There are different compensation rates for in-court hours and out-of-court hours. Time is claimed in hours and minutes to the nearest tenth of an hour. See the chart below:

Dates of service provided for representation should be itemized, in chronological order, on attachments to the CJA Form submitted for payment. Services rendered prior to a court appointment or authorization requires ratification by the court, with a "nunc pro tunc" date indicated in the court order.
