United States District Judge Gregg Costa was nominated by President Barack Obama on September 8, 2011, to a seat vacated by Senior United States District Judge John D. Rainey. He was confirmed by the Senate on April 26, 2012, and received his commission on April 26, 2012.

The Judiciary will remain open for business through October 17, 2013. When no funding mechanism was in place on October 1, 2013, the Judiciary projected that fee income and no-year appropriated funds would enable court operations to continue for ten business days.

The Judicial Conference has approved changes to the federal court miscellaneous fee schedules. Effective December 1, 2013, the following changes will take effect:

1. The filing fee for an appeal to a Court of Appeals will increase by $50, for a new total of $505.

United States Magistrate Judge Diana Song Quiroga was appointed by the United States District Court for the SouthernDistrict of Texas on December 20, 2011, to a seat vacated by the appointment of then United States Magistrate Judge Diana Saldaña to a district judge position.

United States Magistrate Judge Ignacio Torteya, III was appointed by the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas, effective January 24, 2014. He will serve in the Brownsville Division.
